KEŠU/THE CASHEW
Cashew trees are not monocultures. They are planted with the aim to improve biodiversity.
Newly grown cashew trees act as a preventive measure against soil erosion, retain moisture in dry season, and provide shade for plants and animals. Furthermore, they are organically grown.
In recent years, demand for cashew nuts is growing worldwide. Cashew nuts are an attractive export crop. Integra Foundation, the founder of Ten Senses Africa, estimates that the trees that have been planted so far as part of the project have potential to increase cashew nut production in Kenya by up to 30 %.
Cashew is an evergreen tropical tree with a well-developed root system. It tolerates drought well and is suitable for cultivation in coastal regions.
